POP3 stands for Post Office Protocol and this setting works just like the Post Office of the digital world. POP3 server delivers a message only once, and it can only be accessed from that email client. POP3 normally deletes emails from the server immediately. Because all the mail on POP3 client is stored locally, it is very vulnerable to hardware, e.g. hard drive failures.
That is a problem. If you received an email on desktop client, it will not show up on other clients such as your mobile, tablet or other desktop clients. For example, you have sent or received an important email from your home computer via POP3. Now that message only exists on that computer. You can't access it from any other location if you need it fast. In a modern world, we all need to have access to our mail on all devices simultaneously. If that's you, consider using IMAP settings for any email client.
IMAP, stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. With IMAP, your messages are kept on a remote server, emails headers are downloaded from the server to your mail device when checking incoming mail. IMAP stores everything remotely on a server than can be accessed and synced through any of your devices. IMAP is a web browser email application on your device. Keep in mind that if you delete a message via IMAP, it will be gone on all devices. So, the use of POP3 is quite limited and outdated. Use IMAP for any email accounts and you will gain control and order over email headache.
